Uncover the truth behind people's moves.
One of the most common questions we get from buyers is “Why are people moving?” Sometimes it’s out of curiosity; other times, it’s related to the house. They wonder if there’s an issue or something like that.
I’ll discuss why people move to the area and then why they move from or within the area. If you’ve lived in Prescott for a while, you know that it’s a very unique place. The climate is certainly a draw for people. We have four distinct seasons, but none of them are extreme. We don’t experience extreme heat, extreme cold, or heavy snowfall. It’s simply a wonderful place with a great climate to live in. That’s a huge draw.
Another aspect is the small-town feel. People just love coming to Prescott. They enjoy the downtown courthouse square and the overall vibe of this small town. We have great amenities for a small town, and being just two hours away from Phoenix provides access to even more amenities. Additionally, many people move here to follow friends who have already relocated.
Prescott gained attention in 1994 when Money Magazine named it the top place to retire in America. Since then, when people are looking to retire or slow down their lives, Prescott has been on their radar. Consequently, we have a significant retirement population.
Once people arrive here, the question arises: Why are they moving? There are various reasons, but they tend to be concentrated in certain areas. First, many are looking to simplify their lives. They may have bought a home with more maintenance, yard work, landscaping, etc. than they desire. So, they want to downsize and simplify.
“Sometimes it’s out of curiosity; other times, it’s related to the house. ”
Health reasons are also common. The high altitude here can be challenging for individuals with health conditions. As a result, many people choose to move to lower elevations or other climates that better suit their health needs.
Family is another reason for relocation. It’s not uncommon for people to move here with the intention of traveling back to certain areas for grandkids’ football games, dance recitals, birthdays, holidays, and so on. However, they often find that they aren’t able to travel as much as they anticipated. Thus, it becomes easier to move back full-time rather than juggling part-time arrangements.
Life changes, such as losing a spouse or family member, having more kids, or kids moving away from home, can also prompt a move. Sometimes, people find that the home they’re living in no longer fits their current situation.
Ultimately, people may just be seeking a change. It can be as simple as that. But because it’s such a common question, I thought I would discuss some of the things we frequently hear from people. We talk to them, strategize with them, and help find solutions for whatever situation they’re dealing with. That’s what we’re here for — to assist people with their decisions.
